Changing the Battery in Your Mini Key Fob
The key fob makes it easy to lock and unlock your vehicle from a distance. It can also activate the panic button on your car, which can scare off break-ins.
If your device ceases to function you can fix it with some simple steps. Ensure that the battery is new. Remove the battery from the ignition, and then press the lock button rapidly three times.
Battery
The most straightforward way to repair the battery of your key fob is to replace it. The key fob is powered by a tiny coin-shaped 3V battery (CR2032 or CR2025) that is generally easily found in general stores, home improvement shops, and even some auto parts stores. Make sure to use a new battery. Old batteries can harm the circuit boards and are no longer useful.
Start by opening the fob. You may have to use a flat screwdriver break the two halves. Place the screwdriver through the seams on both sides of the fob, and lift the clips which hold it in place. They are easy to break so work slowly and carefully.
After replacing the battery, reassemble the fob and test it to ensure that everything is working just as it should. If it doesn't work after pressing the button several times, make sure the contacts are clean. You can also try it using another key fob to determine if the issue is isolated to a specific key. If it isn't, there may be another reason for why the key fob isn't functioning. For example, it could be that the button is worn out. This would only cause the button to work only occasionally, not all the time.

It's possible that your fob is simply reset. This requires the transmitter in your fob to become recognized by the receiver inside your Mini and a unique code is used for each pairing. The fob needs to be programmed when they are removed from the system or replaced after you buy a new one and in some cases when the battery is replaced. Chip that isn't working
Modern electronic key fobs provide more convenience and function than traditional manual keys. However, they are also more vulnerable to damage. One of the most frequent issues is a defective chip that stops the fob from functioning properly. Luckily, this is usually an simple fix.
If your fob is continually not turning on your car, it is an indication that the chip is malfunctioning. It is typically possible to fix the problem by replacing the battery. This is an inexpensive and easy fix which can be found at any hardware store or retailer. Be sure to buy the correct battery compatible with the model of your vehicle to avoid problems.
The fob shouldn't be exposed to water, or soapy residue. The presence of water can cause corrosion, which can interfere with the circuit board. If this is the case you'll have to clean the board with isopropyl and electronic cleaner prior to installing an entirely new battery.
After the battery has been replaced, it is a good idea to test the fob's functionality before driving the car. With a voltmeter, test the voltage of the new battery to determine whether it's at an acceptable level. If not then it may be required to replace the entire chip inside the remote. First, check that the battery in your key fob remains in good condition and hasn't been replaced. Once a brand new key fob battery is installed, it will not be reprogrammed. It will need to be replaced.
Once the key fob is programmed it will then be able to communicate with the car and control its functions, including radio, air conditioning and even the sunroof and windows.
